Street Fighter 6 rounds out its launch roster in the latest PlayStation State of Play. Zangief, Cammy, and newcomer Lily make their trailer debut to complete the cast of 18 launch characters (2 more than the launch roster for Street Fighter V). In total, there will be 6 brand new characters joining the original 8 World Warriors as well as 4 other fan favourites from across the franchise.
None of this is too much of a surprise following the leak back in June of 2022 that spoiled the roster’s names along with some official artwork. However, it is very exciting to finally get to see these characters in motion. The trailers we had seen so far pointed to a vibrant and colourful world jam packed with that specific Street Fighter 6 energy and these 3 new announcements certainly met those expectations.
Zangief was first up, demonstrating an array of target combo strikes as well as the grabs that are going to terrorize players. The notorious Screw Piledriver (a.k.a the Spinning Piledriver or SPD) is of course back alongside the anti air version introduced in Street Fighter V, the Borscht Dynamite. He also gets a counterhit-throw – the Tundra Storm – to punish anyone trying to sneak in some quick hits. Finally we also got a look at his Super Arts. The Level 2 Cyclone Lariat is a callback to Zangief’s V-Trigger 1 from the previous game. Meanwhile the Level 3 Bolshoi Storm Buster shows that he maybe took more than a few cues from Rainbow Mika when they teamed up and adds a bunch of showmanship to the ever brutal big spinning buster he’s so famous for.
Next was a look at Lily, a young girl who speaks with the spirits of nature. She has big boots to fill as she is a descendant of the Thunderfoot tribe, just like the Super Street Fighter II character T.Hawk. The two share a variety of special moves in name and spirit; Condor Dive, Condor Spire, and Tomahawk Buster all return with an added twist that they can be powered up by utilizing Condor Wind. While much shorter than T.Hawk, she makes up for her lack of natural range with the war clubs she carries into battle – making her one of the few street fighters who actively brawl with weapons.
Last but certainly not least is Cammy. Ms. White’s redesign is particularly striking. Gone are the braids and leotard, but she retains the signature hair tuft out the front of her face and her array of ferocious special attacks. Spiral Arrow, Cannon Spike, and Hooligan Combination all return with updated Street Fighter 6 flair. She even has a throwback to both her Street Fighter IV Cammy Quick Combination (CQC) move that is a parry super with an homage to the 1996 animated movie.
The 3 fighters were also shown off alongside 3 new stages. Zangief flexed his moves to a crowd at Barmeley Steelworks. Lily beat up Blanka in the Thunderfoot Settlement, and Cammy gave us a glimpse at the foggy King Street.
Street Fighter 6 is already available for pre-order with a slated launch date of June 2nd, 2023. The next generation Street Fighter game is looking to expand the traditional fighting game experience across three brand new game modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour, and Battle Hub.
